Don't forget the UK!

Before coming to the UK, I never thought one second about British beers. After one month, I know now that Carling is an English beer and that some of their commercials are too funny not to share them with you! Of course a commercial cannot always be funny, so that's why I also added a few other good commercials from the beer!

I really like the first commercial that is posted below, who does not want this man?!

Enjoy Valentine's Day!

Taxbeater Stella

Hi readers,

A few blogposts ago Jonathan made a post about the difference in positioning Stella in the UK and in Belgium. I'd like to add something to his post that I found pretty interesting.

As Jonathan clearly pointed out, Stella doesn't have the same alcohol content in the UK as in Belgium. Stella in the UK is 4.8% and in Belgium it's 5.2%. Now why is that?

Basically AB Inbev had seen the price for raw materials and energy costs rise which would force them to pass ona 7.8 per cent price increase across all it's brands. This however was not accepted by the majority of retailers forcing AB Inbev to find another solution.

This solution came in the form of a alcohol content decrease and smaller bottles. This way AB Inbev could save on taxes, estimated £8,6 million a year.

Officially AB Inbev reported that their decision to lower the alcohol content was based on the fact that lower-alcohol beers was an evolving trend in the UK.

Many may argue their honesty. Saving £8,6 million after a their sales dropped £11,6 million in 2011.

While the most won't really bother as long as the price doesn't change and the taste stays the same, there are a some 5.2 fans on a mission to bring back the 5.2 to the UK. You can join their facebookgroup.

Beers,

Charly

Stella Artois, the differences in marketing between Belgium & the UK.

Stella Artois is as we all know a Belgian Beer brand owned by Anheuser-Busch Inbev, the world’s largest brewer. Stella has been brewed in Leuven since 1926.  The alcohol content of Stella in Belgium is 5.2%, in the UK the alcohol content has been lowered to 4.8%. In the UK, the Republic of Ireland, Canada and New Zeeland Anheuser-Busch InBev launched a Stella lager with 4% alcohol content.

On a marketing / advertising level there are also some differences between the Belgian and UK market.  In Belgium Stella is marketed as a regular lager, in other countries like the UK Stella is marketed as a Premium Lager sold at an higher price with a modified marketing & advertising campaign. The Slogan in the UK for example was ‘Reassuringly Expensive’, this highlites the premium positioning. These differences in positioning can be seen in the commercials in the different countries. In the video's below you can see that the UK commercial focus on the 'Premium' aspect. The use of French language & slogan highlites the 'Premium' & 'Classy' character of Stella in the UK.
